Grotto Waterfalls in the Umpqua National Forest.

Brad and I hiked to Grotto Waterfalls in late August. That's why the waterfall was so diminished. You might want to try it earlier, but you'd have to wait for the snow to melt to get back there. Just check with the North Umpqua Ranger District: 541-496-3542.

Apart from those off Cavitt Creek, the Little River offers four hikes: Grotto Falls, Yakso Falls, Hemlock Falls and Clover Waterfalls, as well as mountain lakes: Hemlock Lake* and Lake* of the Woods. All are within easy driving distance of one another. One can easily hike to all four waterfalls in one day.

Directions to the hiking trail for Grotto Waterfalls.

If you want to spend some time in the area, the USFS maintains camping facilities at the mountain lakes: Lake in the Woods and Hemlock Lake. The campgrounds have no running water, but do have camping sites, restrooms. Hiking trails originating at Lake of the Woods campground go to Hemlock Waterfalls, Yakso Waterfalls and Clover Waterfalls. Plan ahead, bring water along with everything else, and you'll have a very nice time. The lakes are lovely too.

*These "lakes" are man-made reservoirs.

Directions to Grotto Waterfalls in the Umpqua National Forest:

In Glide, Oregon, on Hwy 138, east of Roseburg, find the North Umpqua Ranger Station on the north side of Hwy 138, just across the street from the Colliding Rivers Wayside. From there head west about a .1 of a mile. See the Little River Road (County Road 17 turning into Forest Service Road 27) to the left.

Follow the Little River Road (County Road 17 turning into Forest Service Road 27) for 16.1 miles. Turn left on Road 2703 and travel for 4.4 miles to Road 2703-150. Follow it for 2 miles to the trailhead turnout for Grotto Waterfalls, just after Emile Creek Bridge.

The Grotto Waterfalls hiking trail is rated more difficult by the USFS. It's .3 of a mile long and rated hiker only. It's different from the other hiking trails because of the cavern behind the waterfall. Hike behind it and come out on the other side of the grotto. This was a lovely hike, with beautiful trees stepping down the ravine.
