Autumn on the wild & scenic Umpqua River:
Deadline Falls

Deadline Falls on the Umpqua River in autumn gives some idea of the forboding power of nature. Pictured here is a class 5 rapid and one of the rapids in this fall is a keeper. When I first read of that I wondered what the term "a keeper" referred to. Late summer I understood exactly. At that time, I couldn't get a good photo of it, but looking to the left of the waterfall, the water is still low enough that one can glimpse the rock scuplted spear that, yes, would grab hold of a raft and not let go - would keep it.

If you don't make this trip too late in the year, you can follow the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway, Hwy 138, to the northern entrance of Crater Lake, usually open until late September and early October, but in 2006 was open even later than that. Take in the beautiful Umpqua River and Crater Lake National Park when the wind blows and snow falls and be sure not to miss a thing.

Hiking on the Tioga segment of the North Umpqua Hiking Trail to the falls

Although this photograph was taken on the north side of the Umpqua River, it is possible to view it from the south side. It's a just 1/4 mile hike from Swiftwater, a BLM park located on the Umpqua River, to the wildlife viewing area on the falls. The hike is wheelchair accessible. May through October, enjoy the spectacle of Salmon and Steelhead jumping the falls.

The wildlife viewing area at Deadline Falls can also be reached from the east. That would be the Wright Creek trailhead, FS Road 4711 on the south side of the Umpqua. That hike would be more than 15 miles. According to the rating of the Umpqua National Forest, the Tioga Segment of the North Umpqua trail ranges from easy to most difficult. Hiking from east to west on the Tioga segment is not wheelchair accessible. Just the first quarter mile from the western trailhead at Swiftwater is so.
