Rabbit Ears,
viewed from the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway

Rabbit Ears is visible on Oregon Hwy 230, or the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway. Follow the directions for the Diverse Loop Tour to get in as many sites as you can on this route. If you can't do that, and are just heading south in Oregon, take a detour off of I - 5 in Roseburg, Oregon to head east along Hwy 138, also the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway. Take in as much as you can of the Wild and Scenic Umpqua River, the hiking trails and waterfalls. Follow Hwy 138 around, you'll see Mt Thielsen and the turnoff for Diamond Lake, and not long after, the turnoff for Medford. Take that turnoff. You're now on Hwy 230, and this is also the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway, which will become the Crater Lake Hwy at the junction for Crater Lake in a few miles. Just keep heading south on this route and you'll see Rabbit Ears.

You can also get quite spectacular view of Mt Thielsen from the Mt Thielsen Viewpoint on the east side of the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway. Park, get out of your car and look back to where you came from and you'll see where the dragon sleeps. (I always think Thielsen looks like a dragon from this view. :-) ) Continue south on the Rogue Umpqua Scenic Byway and you'll see the Rogue River, the Rogue River Gorge at Union Creek, the Natural Bridge. You'll also see different trailheads. Perhaps you might want to hike to National Creek Waterfalls, a short hike of less than a mile round trip. Or if you have more in mind, hike the National Rogue River Hiking Trail for some amazing views of the workings of water and geology. Be sure to take the turnoff for Prospect and take in the views and hiking trails to Mill Creek Waterfalls, Barr Creek Waterfalls and Pearsoney Waterfalls on the Rogue River. From there, continue heading south to Medford, Oregon where you can meet up with I - 5 again.
