The Beach at Ecola State Park:

ecola beach on the oregon coast.

The Oregon coast offers beauty unparalleled. On these pages find scenic wonders
spanning the coast from north to south along Hwy 101 and the Coastal Scenic Byway.

Ecola State Park on the Oregon Coast is near the resort community of Cannon Beach. The park shares both
Ecola Beach and Indian Beach. The word ecola means whale in the tongue of then local native tribes; the beach is so
named because William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition walked over Tillamook Head to the beach from Fort Clatsop
with the hopes of getting some whale blubber from a beached whale. Clark arrived too late. The local natives having already
parted out the blubber, yet Clark was able to trade with the locals and return to camp with some blubber. The name remains
a reminder of the hardships endured that winter and the legacy those of us who follow claim.
