... Wooley Creek Recreation Area on the Salmon River ...When Brad and I reached Hwy 96, near the place where the Salmon meets the Klamath River, we turned right and headed east along the Klamath River. Our original plans for this trip had included the California Coast and the Redwoods, but since our time was limited, and we spent so much of it on the Salmon, we turned east on 96 and followed the Klamath River until we connected with I - 5, From there we went to Ashland, Oregon, before heading east over the mountains to Brad's retreat. There are any number of choices you can make at this point: Head south and west on 96 until you connect with 299. Follow 299 west and connect with Hwy 101 just north of Arcata. Arcata is an interesting town. The town has an excellent food coop, if you care to replenish your groceries. From Arcata enjoy the coast and California Redwoods. Driving north on 101 will bring you to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, with many old growth Redwoods to enjoy. Don't miss the Newton B. Drury Parkway, a slight deviation off Hwy 101. Or perhaps you'd rather follow 299 south and east and take the lovely drive through the Trinity Alps. Turn north and east on Road 3, and enjoy mountains, Trinity Lake on a more leisurely route that eventually brings you out to Callahan, near your stepping off point at Etna. Although Brad and I have traveled the scenic route along the Trinity, we don't have photographs to share. We'll have to go back again. :-) However, I do have a selection of photos to share of the Klamath River route with you. ... and the Salmon River meets the Klamath ...Travel northern California.
