As with all natural features that include water, the earlier the visit in the season the better. Many of the photographs in this site were taken along the lake only two weeks before another visit in early September. By that time the water in this low lying area was gone, leaving behind mudflats and tules. Fortunately, the lake is huge and this area but a small part. We drove along the lake, and took many more photographs for there was still water, certainly birds, and in abundance.

Klamath Basin is the heart of the Pacific Flyway. It sustains over 430 species of resident and migratory birds, including bald eagles, sandhill cranes and pelicans. The southern half of Klamath Lake supports Bald Eagles year round. Howard Bay on Klamath Lake is home to nesting Blue Herons, Pelicans and Snow Geese. Klamath Lake is the largest body of fresh water in Oregon, covering an expanse of 133 square miles.

Easily accessible and quite marvelous birding sites: The Upper and Lower Klamath Wildlife Refuges, Tulelake Wildlife Refuge, Wood River Wetlands on Agency Lake, Howards Bay and Shoalwater Bay - Eagle Ridge on Klamath Lake.
