The wetlands at Shoalwater Bay are bordered by a forest of Ponderosa Pine on the east, and uplands. The Mountain Lake Wilderness Crater can be viewed from the southern edge of the marsh. The Cascades form a natural boundary to the west.

Birds to look for include Ring-necked Ducks, Cinnamon Teals, Bald Eagles, Rough-legged Hawks, Black Terns, White-headed Woodpeckers, Great Gray Owls, Lewis's Woodpeckers, Pigmy Nuthatches, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Western Tanagers, Mountain Bluebirds, Mountain Chickadees. Several warbler species are seasonally common in the willow and cottonwood trees along the lake shoreline.

Broodrearing from May to August: Ducks, Geese, Grebes, Herons and Egrets.

Autumn in Klamath Basin

The height of the season for viewing Pelicans, Egrets, Grebes and Herons begins in August and continues through September.

It is estimated one to two million ducks and geese migrate through Klamath Basin during October and November.

Spring in Klamath Basin

Shorebirds and Waterfowl stop off on their annual migrations to Alaska and Canada from March to May. Thousands return to nest in Klamath Basin.

Winter in Klamath Basin

The largest population of Bald Eagles winter in Klamath Basin from November through February.
